Spessartine was previously distinguished as a "manganese" garnet by Henry Seybert in 1823 using mineral from Haddam, Connecticut, USA.

Originally this mineral, which comes from the Spessart Mountains, was called "granatförmiges Braunsteinerz" by Martin Klaproth in 1797. Spessartine occurs in magmatic, metamorphic and pegmatitic rocks.

There is a possibility to interchange Andalusite, Chysoberyl, Hessonite, Titanite, Opaas & Fire Opal
